Upgrades to Rijeka’s water infrastructure underway

Improvements are being made to the municipal waste water collection and treatment, and water supply infrastructure in Rijeka – Croatia’s third-largest city with a population of approximately 190 000 – under an EU-funded project due to be completed in late 2023. The objectives of the project are to increase connection rates to the public sewerage system, provide for adequate levels of waste water treatment and reduce water losses from the supply network.

Upgraded infrastructure at FISABIO proves worth during COVID-19 pandemic

Spain’s efforts to combat pandemics like COVID-19 have received a boost thanks to EU-funding to upgrade infrastructure and purchase new equipment for the Valencian Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research (FISABIO). The project puts FISABIO in a better position to face new challenges in microbiology and infectious diseases. The centre’s bioinformatics department is now the only one in Spain capable of processing sequences at high speeds and in large quantities, and the only one in Valencia with a biological level three security room.

Online platform reduces business red tape in Emilia-Romagna, Italy

The Italian region of Emilia-Romagna has rolled-out a digital platform which provides a centralised place for businesses to fill in administrative documents and other essential paperwork. Almost all the region’s municipalities are now affiliated to the platform, which was developed through the EU-backed Unified Access project. The new online system deals with around 9 000 administrative procedures every month, helping to make life easer for thousands of end-users including SMEs, larger companies and individual business professionals.

Encouraging Norwegian and Swedish cross-border drivers to switch to eco-friendly cars

The Green Drive Region project led to an increase in sales of fossil fuel-free cars in the cities of Akershus and Hedmark in Norway and in Värmland, Dalarna and Gävleborg in Sweden. This was thanks to campaigns urging both motorists and private businesses regularly crossing the border between Norway and Sweden to switch to vehicles powered by renewable energy sources.

A start-up company based in Emilia-Romagna, Italy, has developed a digital platform and web app called Vilfredo, which is helping to reduce energy use in public buildings, offices and industrial plants. Devised by Energy Way Srl, the platform can monitor and analyse consumption in real time, allowing users to optimise their building’s energy needs. The easy-to-use app – configured for computers, tablets and smartphones – is helping local businesses cut costs and reduce the region’s CO2 emissions.

The EU-funded Interconnection of Cyclades Islands project is a technically complex initiative aimed at ensuring the reliable, economic supply of electricity to the Greek islands of Syros, Paros, Tinos, Mykonos, and Naxos. Rolled out over three phases over 14 years, when complete all the Cyclades Islands will get their electricity from the mainland.
