Farm to Fork 2020 conference: Building sustainable food systems together

European Commission

date:  23/10/2020

The ‘Farm to Fork 2020 conference: Building sustainable food systems together’ was the first annual gathering of European stakeholders willing to engage and help shape the EU's path towards a fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly food system.

The virtual conference, held on 15 and 16 October 2020 (World Food Day), focused on implementation of the Farm to Fork Strategy, adopted in May 2020, for a fair, healthy and environmentally-friendly food system. Together with the Biodiversity Strategy, the Farm to Fork Strategy is at the heart of the European Green Deal.

Reducing food loss and waste is a key action strand of the Farm to Fork Strategy. The strategy puts forward ambitious proposals to establish legally binding targets to reduce food waste across the EU, by end 2023 and to revise EU rules on date marking (‘use by’ and ‘best before’ dates), by end 2022.
The Commission will also integrate food loss and waste prevention in other policy areas. It will seek to scale up action across the EU, mobilising all players, notably by encouraging uptake of the key recommendations for action of the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste.

Over 1.000 stakeholders participated via the event virtual platform, with another 8.000 viewers per day following the live web streaming. More than 80 1:1 virtual networking sessions took place on the event’s virtual platform during the two days.

The conference largely demonstrated that each and everyone's contribution is needed. The dynamic interactions and high interest revealed an appetite for working together to transform our food system. Feedback received during the conference indicates that the Farm to Fork Strategy provides the right path for change, that transformation is urgent, and that it requires engagement of the whole food value chain, public authorities and consumers.
