10-year anniversary of Copernicus Emergency Management Service (25/07/2022)

Timely, unbiased and accurate data on forecasted and ongoing disasters is crucial for effective decision-making. This is exactly what the Copernicus Emergency Management Services (CEMS), which celebrated its 10th anniversary last June, offers: geospatial products based on satellite and ground-based measurements that forecast, monitor and analyse disasters in real-time.

The OECD Programme on Chemical Accidents released a Natech awareness-raising brochure for a multi-disciplinary audience.

New Global Human Settlement Layer data release (22/07/2022)

On the 11th World Urban Forum in Katowice, the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC) presented the Global Human Settlement Layer 2.0, a new framework that provides information on all settlements worldwide with unprecedented precision.

Kick-off meeting of the Network of Drought Observatories in the EU (25/07/2022)

The World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought (17th of June) also saw the kick-off meeting of the network of drought observatories and experts in the EU hosted by JRC as part of the European Drought Observatory for Resilience and Adaptation (EDORA) project. The meeting took stock of recent developments in drought monitoring and forecasting.

European Handbook for Sustainable Development Goals Voluntary Local Review - 2022 edition (25/07/2022)

A new handbook was successfully launched at the eleventh session of the World Urban Forum in Katowice, Poland (26-30 June 2022).

The JRC has released guidance for Natech risk management for operators of hazardous industrial sites and national authorities.

The Science Pillar of the Knowledge Network at the 7th Civil Protection Forum (25/07/2022)

New mareograph devices to monitor possible tsunamis from landslides or volcanic explosions installed in Indonesia (25/07/2022)

A collaboration between the JRC and multiple Indonesian organisations (RIN, BMKG, BAKT) led to the installation of a new set of devices in one of the islands around the Anak Krakatau Volcano. It is now possible to measure the sea level in the region and transmit real-time data that can create an alert for authorities in case of abnormal sea level height.

Update on the forest fire team’s activities in Latin America (25/07/2022)

The European Union (EU) and Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) have a longstanding relationship based on common values and established on a legal framework with most of the 33 countries through association and trade agreements, and political and cooperation dialogues.

Exploring improvements for landslide risk and flood monitoring products in Copernicus Emergency Management Service (CEMS) mapping: the validation studies for cyclones in Honduras (25/07/2022)

CEMS mapping delivered several products for cyclones Eta and Iota in Honduras. Two validation studies explored and proposed improvements regarding landslide risk assessment and temporal monitoring of floods. The focus is on the use of state-of-the-art models, their data input requirements and the output extension and enhancement.

The new data from the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S) show that the last seven years globally were the seven warmest on record by a clear margin.

Workshop of the French Presidency on the “Impact of climate change on European civil protection” 1st & 2nd February 2022, Paris (France). (25/01/2022)

The year 2021 was characterized by the record number of 114 activations of the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, breaking the previous record set in 2020 (102). The solidarity of the Member States made it possible to avoid the worst however, a threshold has been crossed. Moreover, the outlook for the effects of climate change is not encouraging: Europe is warming up faster than any other region in the world. The Union Civil Protection Knowledge Network was officially launched on 7 December 2021. The “Knowledge Network Day” brought together civil protection and disaster management policy makers, scientists, and practitioners to exchange their experiences and knowledge.

EC-JRC support to EU emergency assistance for Tonga (25/01/2022)

The Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha’apai underwater volcano in Tonga erupted violently on 15 January 2022 after a period of volcanic activity emitting ash. As one of the biggest eruptions in its history, it also generated a tsunami. EU, supported with its operational scientific tools, played a critical role in delivering the necessary humanitarian assistance.

European Commission adopts new EU Forest Strategy for 2030 (04/10/2021)

To achieve greenhouse gas emission reductions of at least 55% by 2030 and climate neutrality in 2050 in the EU, the Forest Strategy (adopted on 16 July 2021) sets a vision and concrete actions for increasing the quantity and quality of forests in the EU and strengthening their protection, restoration and resilience.

Strengthening the Synergies between Agriculture and Flood Risk Management in the European Union (04/10/2021)

In 2020 a survey and concept note on agriculture and flood risk management in the EU was developed by the European Commission and shared with the Common Implementation Strategy’s Working Group on Floods. Twenty two replies were received. A draft report was developed based on these replies as well as the available literature.

A summer of disasters: DRMKC support to EU’s crisis response (04/10/2021)

The EU has state of the art early warning and monitoring tools to support the European Civil Protection Mechanism and External Action. The summer of 2021 was particularly intense for floods, wildfires, earthquakes and conflict. This is the story of how EU scientists go the extra mile to deliver satellite data, modelling forecasts and open source information to support the EU’s crisis response.

Current Practice in Flood Risk Management in the EU (04/10/2021)

In 2019, the Commission launched a study on ‘Current Practice in Flood Risk Management’ which looked at practices that Member States currently have to deal with flood risk management. This study has now been completed and a final report has been drafted. The report focuses on particular aspects identified by the Member States as being challenging to tackle.
