Accounting for aerosols in climate change forecasts

EU-funded research is helping to improve the relevance of future climate change scenarios by developing a way to account for aerosols - minute particles in the atmosphere - and their effect on global warming.

The research could eventually lead to a more informed strategy to mitigate climate change. Aerosols counteract some of the warming effects of greenhouse gases, mostly by increasing the amount of sunlight reflected back into space. But the extent to which this happens is not yet well understood by climate change scientists.
