Sharper sensing for surveillance systems

Remote sensing is widely used for security surveillance, military reconnaissance and environmental monitoring. An EU-funded project's signal processing system improves images and range information from the collected data using smaller, lighter recording devices than traditional systems. Two prototypes are already available.

The blurry surveillance videos familiar from TV news reports are captured using large, power-hungry sensing equipment. A new method of video signal processing developed by the CS-ORION project can produce sharper images from flexible, small recording systems mounted on lightweight platforms such as drones or small satellites.
