According to the International Diabetes Federation, in 2015 there were more than 415 million reported cases of diabetes worldwide. By 2040, this number is expected to exceed 642 million. In the EU alone, over 634 000 people died in 2010 as a result of diabetic complications. This is the equivalent of 11 % of all deaths in EU adults aged 20-79 years. Today in Europe, nearly 50 million people are using approved anti-diabetic agents to control their glucose levels. However, as insulin is the only treatment available – and its benefits are limited – controlling glucose levels and managing related complications remain a challenge.
