EU aeronautics sector boosted by ‘ice sensor’ flight trials

“Commercial aircraft have detected possible threats while flying in the vicinity of deep convective clouds since at least the early 1990s,” explains HAIC (High Altitude Ice Crystals) project coordinator Fabien Dezitter from Airbus. “Heated probes and engines are the areas of aircraft most prone to high-altitude icy conditions. The HAIC project has sought to develop and test the next generation of instrumentation and detection systems to address this challenge.”
