Horizon 2020 work programme for 2016-2017 published

The European Commission will invest almost €16 billion in research and innovation in the next two years under Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation funding scheme, following a new work programme for 2016-17 adopted on 13 October. The work programme is now available on the participant portal.

Interested in EU Research Funding in Ethiopia?

Come along to our information seminar to learn about the opportunities for Ethiopian researchers in the Horizon 2020 programme.

The purpose of the event is to inform researchers and research institutions on the European Union's Horizon 2020 programme, opportunities for Ethiopian researchers and conditions for participation. On the same day, the European Commission will publish the next calls for proposals of Horizon 2020 for the years 2016 and 2017.

European Commission invests €16 billion in funding for research and innovation over next two years

Carlos Moedas, Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation said: "Research and innovation are the engines of Europe's progress and vital to addressing today's new pressing challenges like immigration, climate change, clean energy and healthy societies. Over the next two years, €16 billion from Horizon 2020 will support Europe's top scientific efforts, making the difference to citizens' lives."

Reducing wriggle room for parasitic flatworms

About 300 million people in 75 tropical and sub-tropical countries are infected with Schistosoma flatworms, which cause a debilitating disease. An EU-funded project looked into a new way of fighting the parasites: tackling specific enzymes in the worms to modify gene expression and stop their development in its tracks.

Sustainable transport – pass it on

Could it be easier and greener to travel around your city? A solution might already exist. People around the world are coming up with clever ideas for low-carbon, high-quality transport. An EU-funded project helps cities learn from the best.

Horizon 2020. First results.

Horizon 2020 is the EU’s biggest ever programme for research and innovation, and it has got off to an excellent start. This brochure presents information on the first 100 calls for proposals that closed by 1 December 2014.

Horizon 2020 indicators. Assessing the results and impact of Horizon

Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU research and innovation programme ever. Almost €80 billion of funding is available over seven years (2014 to 2020) – in addition to the private and national public investment that this money will attract. This publication presents the full set of Key Performance and Cross-Cutting Issues Indicators for Horizon 2020, including those for the European Institute of Technology and EURATOM.

The rural-city connection in sub-Saharan Africa

Sub-Saharan Africa is modernising fast, changing the dynamic between town and countryside. What is the best way to manage the impacts on rural and urban communities? An EU-funded project is collecting data that helps policymakers make wise choices for inclusive development.

Studying the past to predict the future: the Amazon River

Climate change knows no boundaries. Its impacts are being felt everywhere, including in the Amazon River basin in South America. An EU-funded partnership between European and Brazilian researchers is studying the underlying mechanisms with a view to drawing up environmental and social mitigation policies.

A boost for health research and collaboration in Africa

Healthcare in Africa faces many challenges; HIV and reproductive health are just two examples. The EU-funded AFRICA BUILD project set up an education, training and knowledge-sharing portal for African health researchers that helped build local capacities, facilitate learning and enhance collaboration between Africa and Europe.

Fast-track to project skills for African researchers

Africa is particularly vulnerable to disease outbreaks, and the continent has large gaps in preventative healthcare. So it makes sense to build regional capacity to find solutions to these health problems. An EU-funded project trained new graduates in Africa to develop health research programmes and share scientific knowledge.

Helping Africa manage its agriculture and woodlands

To ensure food and energy security for today’s growing populations, governments increasingly turn to earth observation. Remotely-sensed data can provide valuable information on crops, livestock, woodlands and fires. Innovative, EU-funded research partnerships helped reinforce African capacities in this area.
