The European Council confirmed in Brussels yesterday the set-up of an European Innovation Council for market-creating innovation under the next EU long-term budget. The Council also invited the Commission to launch a new pilot initiative on breakthrough innovation within the remaining time of Horizon 2020.
A total of 242 small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) from 30 countries have been selected for funding under the latest round of the SME Instrument. The companies will receive a total amount of €12 million to share between their projects to get their innovations faster on the market.

The European Commission released the Open science monitor, a radically expanded, updated version of this key scientific tool, which tracks key indicators in the fast-growing European open science movement. With the objective of providing data and insight needed to support the implementation of open science policies, the Monitor gathers the latest developments, drivers and impacts in the field. In addition, it draws on multiple indicators and rich case studies.
The prize, run as part of the European Innovation Council (EIC) pilot funded under Horizon 2020, the EU’s research and innovation programme, will award €10 million to an innovative, commercially viable and low-cost solution to launch light satellites. At the beginning of May, the European Commission announced a proposed budget of €100 billion for the next EU Research and Innovation Framework Programme, called Horizon Europe (2021-2027).
375 proposals have been submitted under the first Horizon 2020 Future and Emerging Technologies (FET) Open call of the European Innovation Council Pilot, that closed on 16 May, for an available budget of 123.7 million EUR.
Today the Commission presented its long-term budget proposal for the 2021-2027 period. Building on the success of the EU's past flagship research and innovation programmes, the Commission proposes to increase investment in research and innovation by allocating €114.8 billion from the future long-term EU budget.
