Electric vehicles: energy cuts for longer range

Research shows that many people are put off buying an electric vehicle because of their limited operating range - the distance that they can travel before they need charging. An EU-funded project is tackling one of the functions reducing range by consuming energy: interior heating and cooling.

In a standard vehicle, the heat created by the internal combustion engine can be used to warm its interior. Electric vehicle motors and batteries generate hardly any heat, however, and therefore require a separate heating solution. Current heating, ventilation and air conditioning technologies for electric vehicles reduce their operating range by up to 25 % according to the team behind the JOSPEL project.
