A lesson in ocean literacy

The SEA CHANGE project aims to encourage citizens to take direct and sustainable action to protect healthy and biodiverse seas by increasing their ocean literacy – defined as an understanding of the ocean’s influence on a person and that person’s impact on the ocean.

Launched in March 2015, the project will achieve its objective by initiating citizen-focused education initiatives with influential networks such as the European Network of Science Centres and Museums (ECSITE), the European Association of Geographers (EUROGEO) and the European Marine Science Educators Association (EMSEA). These networks are all partners in the three-year project.

The researchers will also compile an in-depth review of the links between oceans and human health – based on the latest research. Social research on citizen and stakeholder attitudes, perceptions and values will be used to design and implement mobilisation activities.

Contributing to the Transatlantic research alliance (Galway Statement), the project will also build on cooperation with Canada and USA, which have substantial experience in Ocean Literacy activities. Partners have already had the opportunity to participate in an outreach activity linked to the deep sea discoveries by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association (NOAA) ship, the Okeanos Explorer.

The SEA CHANGE project has also already started a number of initiatives to develop ocean literacy activities in Europe.

Finally, efforts will be made to sustain an ocean-literate society in Europe beyond the life of the project through the establishment of codes of good practice, a toolbox for outreach actions, public campaigns and other ongoing community activities. The overall concept of the project is that ocean literate citizens will take decisions and push for policies that lead to a healthier planet.
