Deadline:  29/09/2020

Number: GROW/2020/OP/0014

The pilot project 'Smart Tourism Destinations' will focus on cities as tourism destinations. It will address the need to strengthen the cooperation of EU cities on mastering data for tourism, thus accompanying them through their transformation to smart tourism destinations.

The general objectives of this pilot project are to

  • improve the positioning of EU as a world tourism destination seeking new mechanisms to boost innovation in the destinations by deploying new technologies and data to create different and highly competitive services
  • develop a knowledge base, including on the impact of tourism (economic, environmental and socio-cultural) in urban EU tourism destinations and support them in designing urban tourism policies through better use of data
  • improve the smart and sustainable management of urban tourism destinations and cooperation on data management between urban tourism destinations in the EU
  • better integrate tourism in urban planning and better use of urban intelligence for tourism development at destinations
  • identify research and development areas to tackle future needs and challenges of urban tourism destinations

The pilot project will start with the mapping study on the use of data by cities in which urban planning and sustainable management of tourism is supported by urban analytics and real-time data. It will develop tools and build the capacity of urban tourism destinations in mastering data as well as in strengthening cooperation on smart tourism at EU level. The results of this pilot project will also inform about how the tourism ecosystem can contribute to current and future EU initiatives related to data and pave the way to more optimal data use for tourism.
