Public consultation on the possible extension of geographical indication protection by the EU to non-agricultural products

On 15 July 2015, the Commission published the Green Paper on Making the most out of Europe’s traditional know-how. The objective was to consult stakeholders on the potential merits and modalities of extending EU-level geographical indication protection to non-agricultural products.
Stakeholders were invited to reply to the questions contained in the Green Paper and to share their views on the areas identified in the document.
The Green Paper presented existing GI protection provided at national and EU level and the potential benefits of extended, unitary protection across the EU. It also included technical questions on the possible options that could be considered.
The Commission presented the preliminary results of the consultation at a stakeholder conference in Brussels on 19 January 2015.
This summary report below provides an overview of the contributions received and the outcome of the conference.
