The importance of the safety management of the EGNSS programmes is well recognised at the highest levels of the Commission. It has therefore been recommended to set-up a formalised SMS (safety Management System).

In the interim a number of recommendations have been implemented to set-up the core elements of an SMS. It is expected therefore that the procedures already followed, even if not formally adopted, will facilitate the introduction of the formal SMS since the key project staff are already aware of their safety responsibilities, albeit without a formal basis.

This SMS must be tailored to interface with existing SMS of external organisations whilst able to be operated within the context of European Commission.
