The European Commission (EC), the European Space Agency (ESA) and the European Defence Agency (EDA) have agreed to join forces in order to develop critical space technologies in Europe.

A star-studded session capped a day of major aeronautics and space events on Tuesday, 12 November 2003, Day 2 of the EC’s Sixth Framework Programme (FP6) launch in Brussels. Dubbed ‘Aerospace Day’ by organizers, highlights included a high-level roundtable session on Europe’s aerospace sector and the presentation of the prestigious CEAS Award to space pioneer Fredrik Engström. The conference close on Day 3 featured a stirring speech by French Minister of Research and former astronaut Claudie Haigneré.

This Resolution was adopted both by the Council of the EU (Competitiveness) and by the Ministerial Council of the European Space Agency (ESA).

Kopernikus is the new name of the European Commission’s earth observation activities previously known as GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) so far. The name Kopernikus was announced by Commission Vice-President Günter Verheugen, today at a dedicated conference in Lille, organised in cooperation with the French presidency of the EU. The objective of Kopernikus is to monitor the state of the environment on land, at sea and in the atmosphere and to improve the security of the citizens in a world facing an increased risk of natural and other disasters.
The 2nd Space Call in the 7th EU Framework Programme (FP7) is about to be published on 3rd September 2008.

Europe and Russia are further strengthening their cooperation in space. The 3rd meeting of the Steering Board of the EU-Russia Dialogue on Space Cooperation took place on 24 June 2008, in Paris.
This tender will focus on establishing the necessary interfaces between the users and the GMES service providers to ensure that the Earth observation-based information will be provided in accordance with the technical specifications and quality standards that allow service integration into the user’s operational workflow.
