Description and objectives

Standards are important tools for competitiveness, especially for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), whose participation in the standardisation process is important for technological progress in the EU.

Standards can also have a broad impact on society, in particular on the safety and well-being of citizens, the efficiency of networks, the environment, workers’ safety and working conditions, accessibility and other public policy fields.

However, standards are written by technical experts who represent the background and interest of the companies they work for. Therefore, it is important for the EU to facilitate and support the participation of experts representing the background and interests of SMEs, and societal and social stakeholders in the standardisation process.

This is emphasised by Regulation (EU) 1025/2012 on European standardisation of October 2012 and is especially true in the European context, where European standards play a very important role in supporting EU legislation and policies.

The aim of these calls for proposals is to conclude three framework partnership agreements (FPA) with European organisations representing consumers (call 314), environmental (call 315) and social (call 316) interests in European standardisation activities.
