EU sanctions against Russia

What? EU Commission Executive Vice-President Valdis Dombrovskis signalled his support for Belgium's move to use tax revenue from frozen Russian assets at EuroClear to support Ukraine.

When? 12 October 2023

Why? The assets were frozen after Russia’s brutal re-invasion of Ukraine in 2022 under legislation spearheaded by FISMA’s Sanctions unit.  President von der Leyen and the EU Commission continue to work on ways that frozen Russian assets can be put to good use to aid in Ukraine’s reconstruction.
