‘Clean tech and innovation’

On 15 February 2023, Commissioner McGuinness delivered the opening remarks at the European Parliament plenary debate on the Green Deal Industrial Plan. She began by recalling the European Green Deal and the pledge to cut emissions by 55% by 2030. But, Ms McGuinness continued, Europe is being tested by war, geopolitical tensions, trade rivalries and climate change. However, she said, a challenge is also an opportunity: the Commission presented on 1 February a Green Deal Industrial Plan to make Europe the home of clean tech and innovation on the road to net zero. Ms McGuinness set out the four ‘pillars’ on which the plan is built: the regulatory environment, financing, skills and trade. On the issue of financing, she highlighted the role of private investors when funding green and clean techs. Here, she stressed the vital part that capital markets can play, and the importance of accelerating the development of a European Capital Markets Union.
