The changing world of payments

On 16 November 2021, Commissioner McGuinness gave a speech at the annual conference of the European Payment Institutions Federation. She began by setting out the ways in which the world of payments, and the rules in place in the EU, have changed in recent years. Contactless payments, QR codes, mobile and digital wallets – as well as new players offering new services – are some of the changes she highlights. Ms McGuinness went on to discuss a number of issues, including instant payments, IBAN discrimination, anti-money laundering, international payments beyond the EU as well as central bank digital currencies and the digital euro.
