Making finance work for citizens

Financial markets should not only work for big companies and financial institutions, but also for SMEs and consumers

On 20 April 2021, Commissioner McGuinness gave a (virtual) speech at the Florence School of Banking and Finance. Ms McGuinness started with a reminder that trust in financial services remains low, consumers rarely change provider, and that very few people purchase a financial product in a Member State other than their own. In considering what needs to be done to help consumers trust financial services and create a fully functioning single market, Ms McGuinness focused on a number of important issues: financial literacy; financial inclusion; payments; digitalisation; retail investment; sustainable finance; and financial stability.
