"Shaping the digital future of finance"

On 30 January, Commissioner McGuinness gave a keynote speech at the Afore Annual Conference on Fintech and Regulation. She spoke about how finance has changed and become more digital, the European Commission’s response to that evolution, and what the next steps might be. While digitalization had already started before the pandemic, Ms. McGuinness stressed that it was hugely accelerated by Covid. And it has brought opportunities – but also new risks, which need to be addressed. She went on to discuss the Commission’s work in a number of areas, including payments, digital currencies, blockchain technologies, and operational resilience and cybersecurity. ‘Overall, the post-Covid story of digital finance is one of enormous opportunities. But these opportunities can only be embraced if we guard against the risks.’
