Supporting the EU’s green agenda

What? The European Commission has asked the European Banking Authority (EBA) for advice on green loans and mortgages.

When? 22 November 2022

Why? Green loans or mortgages could help households and SMEs in the current energy crisis. For instance, they could help them improve the energy performance of their buildings or switch to zero-emission vehicles. The nascent market for green retail loans and mortgages is developing, and credit institutions are starting to apply and test the EU Taxonomy as a basis for originating retail green loans. The EBA’s advice should provide an overview of current market practices and help the Commission decide on measures to encourage the development of the green loans and mortgages market, in line with its July 2021 Sustainable Finance Strategy.
