Supporting Ukrainian fintechs

On 16 May 2022, Commissioner McGuinness gave the opening speech at the kick-off of the fintech challenge for Ukraine. She began by reiterating the EU’s support for Ukraine and its people, in the face of Russia’s aggression. Ms McGuinness said that the fintech challenge was an opportunity to draw on the creativity of the Ukrainian technology and financial sector. She added that it was also a chance to highlight what the Ukrainian government is doing to keep the country running and an opportunity to prepare for what might be needed to rebuild Ukraine after the war. Ms McGuinness then set out some of digital platforms and projects that are being set up in Ukraine and underlined how many Ukrainian companies have kept working in the most difficult of circumstances.
