The transatlantic partnership: a vital part of the EU’s global cooperation on financial policy

On 17 February 2021, Commissioner McGuinness gave a (virtual) keynote opening speech at an event on ‘Financial resilience, the future of secondary sanctions, and global response’, organised by the Atlantic Council in Washington. Ms McGuinness began by underlining that financial markets are global, so global cooperation is vital. She recalled the EU’s commitment to multilateralism and stressed the importance of transatlantic relations. Looking forward to some of the areas where the EU and the US will be cooperating, Ms McGuinness underlined the importance of taking climate change into account and of sustainable finance as one of the ways to mitigate it, and welcomed President Biden renewing the US’s commitment to the Paris Agreement. She also highlighted technology and data policies, as well as the fight against money laundering. Ms McGuinness also discussed the EU’s work towards a stronger euro and a more resilient EU economy, stressing that these are beneficial not only for the EU itself, but also for the US. She looked forward to working with the new US administration on financial resilience and sanctions.
