Barrier tracker - new app to improve connectivity of rivers (24/04/2018)

The density of barriers in European rivers is much higher than indicated by available databases – up to one barrier in every kilometre of river. Information about the location and density of smaller barriers is often unknown. Now, for the first time, scientists are inviting citizens to help in updating information about these barriers with a newly-developed smartphone app.

Is your company working on a solution that benefits the climate or the environment? You might be eligible to receive up to 60% co-financing. The European Commission launched a new call for proposals under the LIFE programme on 28 April, with application deadlines in September 2017. Nearly €260 million in funding is available for environment and climate projects ("traditional projects").

SME Instrument impact report is out! (11/05/2017)

With more than 31,000 applications received and more than 2,000 small companies funded, in only three years the SME Instrument has proven its appeal for the European innovation ecosystem. The 2017 edition of the SME Instrument impact report presents the first growth trends of the funded SMEs, their profile as well as the key features of the programme that have made its unique selling points. It shows cumulative data from 2014 to 2016.

Horizon 2020 funded WADI project has successfully tested an innovative water leak detection surveillance service. A plane equipped with hyper-spectral and infrared cameras recorded images of the irrigation network in the South-East of France.

401 environment project proposals seek Horizon 2020 funding (08/03/2017)

The European Commission has received 401 proposals for projects in the areas of climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials by the call deadline on 8 March 2017. All in all, a budget of about €341 million is available in 2017 for the Societal Challenge "Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials" of Horizon 2020.

Photovoltaics-based pumping for irrigation system reduces electricity costs up to 75% (09/03/2017)

More than 300 farmers, irrigators and SMEs visited the demonstration site of an EU-funded project MASLOWATEN in Villena (Spain) on 10 February. 360 kilowatt peak (kWp) photovoltaics-based pumping for agricultural irrigation system that reduces electricity costs up to 75% was installed there in 2016.

European Commission kick-starts new environment projects with nearly €120 million in EU funding (08/11/2016)

The European Commission has awarded grants to 28 new environment, climate action and circular economy projects as part of its Horizon 2020 programme. These projects were selected from among 141 proposals which had been submitted by 8 March 2016 in reply to three calls for proposals (one-stage call topics).

Financing SME Eco-innovation (08/11/2016)

"Grow circular!" was the theme of the 20th Eco-innovation Forum that took place in Tallinn (Estonia), between 26 and 28 October 2016. It examined financing opportunities for eco-innovative SMEs and showcased companies that succeeded in attracting investors. Executive Agency for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises organised a business-to-investors matchmaking event. Most promising eco-innovation companies met 'cleantech' investors in more than 100 bilateral meetings.

How to address the new global challenges on Earth observation? (07/11/2016)

Several EU-funded Earth observation projects joined discussions on global Earth observation initiatives at the GEO-XIII plenary on 7-10 November in St. Petersburg. The European Commission is showcasing how it provides support for the implementation of the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) through the Copernicus Programme and the Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (Horizon 2020).

28 new environment projects in preparation (06/07/2016)

The European Commission has started to prepare the grants for 28 new projects to be funded through Horizon 2020's Societal Challenge "Climate action, environment, resource efficiency and raw materials". In total, the new projects will receive an EU contribution of about € 119.5 million. The launch of the new projects is planned for December.
