Network of Blue Schools

A European Blue School is a school that engages students in marine and maritime-related topics through a project-based learning approach. This to raise awareness and create a sense of responsibility for our oceans in them.

The awareness of the impact that the oceans have on us – people – as well as our impact on the ocean is called Ocean Literacy.

The EU4Ocean Coalition, with the support of DG MARE, brings together organisations, projects and individuals committed to promoting ocean literacy across Europe. The European Blue Schools Network is one of the three pillars of the Coalition, set up as a hub for all schools and teachers striving to engage pupils on oceanic topics and train a new generation of ocean-literate young citizens. The network was established in 2020 and now has 350 schools in the EU plus 50 in neighbouring countries.

Now become a blue school!

Education for Climate Coalition

The Climate Education Coalition seeks to co-create a participatory education community to support the changes needed for a climate-neutral society. We want to inspire, develop and leverage Europe's innovative capacities in education by promoting bottom-up actions around five priorities: training teachers, developing ecological skills and competences, linking education and science, raising awareness and changing behaviour.

The Education for Climate Coalition aims to bring together the entire EU education community, including:

• Teachers, educators, students, trainers and parents, at all levels and in all types of institutions

• Stakeholders active in the field of education and/or the environment

Digital Media Cluster of the Joint Research Centre

The Joint Research Centre (JRC) is the internal research centre of the European Commission. It helps Commission services and policy makers make decisions based on sound scientific evidence.

The JRC also offers an online visitors' centre at the Digital Media Hub, which hosts a wealth of scientific resources in line with the Commission's priorities.

Our virtual lab tours allow you to step behind the scenes to see where magic works and put your knowledge to the test through integrated quizzes. The center also offers interactive games that help students learn about sustainability, health, digital transformation and many more topics.

EU Pollinators ⁇

Europe is home to an amazing variety of insects that pollinate crops and plants. These heroes ensure our food production and the preservation of biodiversity. They are therefore essential to the health of nature and our well-being. However, in recent decades, the number and diversity of wild pollinating insects, such as bees, butterflies, hoverflies and moths, have decreased significantly in Europe.

Toolkit on EU nature protection policy

In addition to being beautiful, European nature is of great importance in many ways to all of us. To help secondary school students understand why, the Directorate-General for the Environment has developed a toolkit on EU nature protection policy.

The toolkit provides resources and instructions for preparing and carrying out indoor and outdoor activities. It will help you guide your students in learning to communicate about local plants, animals and habitats, as well as Europe's common natural heritage. Inspiring students by what surrounds them can be a first step towards meaningful engagement in nature.

If you want to learn more about biodiversity, you can also consult the Commission's Biodiversity Knowledge Centre.

Greencomp

Climate change and biodiversity loss require urgent action and sustainable and systemic change in attitudes, mindsets and practices. Education has a key role to play in deepening our understanding of these issues, changing our behaviours and attitudes and achieving a fair and sustainable future.

The European Commission, in cooperation with education experts from across Europe, has developed a competence framework to promote sustainability learning in the EU. This document can serve a wide range of purposes, including curriculum design, self-reflection, and certification assessment.
