Overview
In May 2026, compared with April 2026, seasonally adjusted industrial production decreased by 0.2% in the euro area and by 0.1% in the EU, according to first estimates from Eurostat, the statistical office of the European Union. In April 2026, industrial production grew by 0.3% in the euro area and by 0.2% in the EU.
In May 2026, compared with May 2025, industrial production decreased by 1.2% in the euro area and by 0.3% in the EU.

Monthly comparison by main industrial grouping and by Member State
In the euro area in May 2026, compared with April 2026, industrial production
decreased for intermediate goods by 0.3%,
increased for energy by 2.2%,
increased for capital goods by 0.3%,
decreased for durable consumer goods by 1.1%,
increased for non-durable consumer goods by 0.8%.
In the EU, industrial production
decreased for intermediate goods by 0.1%,
increased for energy by 2.0%,
increased for capital goods by 0.3%,
decreased for durable consumer goods by 0.4%,
increased for non-durable consumer goods by 0.6%.
Among the Member States for which data are available, the largest monthly decreases were recorded in Ireland (-5.2%), Malta (-3.7%) and Lithuania (-3.0%). The highest increases were observed in Luxembourg (+2.7%), Hungary (+2.3%) and Poland (+2.0%).
Annual comparison by main industrial grouping and by Member State
In the euro area in May 2026, compared with May 2025, industrial production
increased for intermediate goods by 1.2%,
increased for energy by 1.3%,
increased for capital goods by 2.6%,
decreased for durable consumer goods by 3.0%,
decreased for non-durable consumer goods by 10.7%.
In the EU, industrial production
increased for intermediate goods by 1.7%,
increased for energy by 1.6%,
increased for capital goods by 3.0%,
decreased for durable consumer goods by 1.7%,
decreased for non-durable consumer goods by 8.1%.
Among the Member States for which data are available, the largest annual decreases were recorded in Ireland (-19.7%), Bulgaria (-4.7%) and Estonia (-3.0%). The highest increases were observed in Denmark and Sweden (both +6.5%), Latvia (+6.2%) and Hungary (+5.4%).

Revisions and timetable
Compared with data issued in the News Release of 15 June 2026, the monthly percentage increase for April 2026 has been revised from +0.1% to +0.3% in the euro area and from +0.1% to +0.2% in the EU. The annual percentage increase has been revised from +0.3% to +0.4% in the euro area and remained unchanged at +0.9% in the EU .
Methods and definitions
The index of industrial production measures the evolution of the volume of production for industry excluding construction, based on data adjusted for calendar and seasonal effects.
Seasonally adjusted euro area and EU series are calculated by aggregating the seasonally adjusted national data.
Total industry covers NACE Rev. 2 sections B to D. Missing observations from Member States for recent months are estimated for the calculation of the euro area and the EU aggregates.

The Euro area (EA21) includes Belgium, Bulgaria, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Croatia, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Slovenia, Slovakia and Finland.
The European Union (EU27) includes Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechia, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Ireland, Greece, Spain, France, Croatia, Italy, Cyprus, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Hungary, Malta, the Netherlands, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Finland and Sweden.
