Getting out of Poverty - Besik - Poland

Besik, 34 years old, left his native Georgia to start a new life in Poland 6 years ago. At the start, he faced a number of new administrative challenges while trying to obtain citizenship in Poland, as well as a work permit to earn a living. He turned to the Association for Legal Intervention, which provides legal support to migrants. Today, Besik works in the construction industry and has started a family in Poland.

Getting out of Poverty - Maryse - France

In France, 13% of the population is at risk of poverty with an ‘at risk of poverty’ income threshold of 878 Euros per month. Maryse, volunteer at the, ‘Secours Catholique’, helps Roma families get in touch with social services. Access to decent housing is one the organisation’s main objectives. Stimbach’s family is a good example of how a family’s living standards can improve if someone helps them understand the administrative procedures.

Getting out of Poverty - Femia - Netherlands

Femia is 88 years old and lives alone in The Hague, in the Netherlands, where 11% of the population is at risk of poverty. Here, the ‘at risk of poverty’ income threshold is 976 Euros per month. After her husband died a year ago, Femia had to take her finances into her own hands, and soon the debts piled up. The Praktische Dienstverlening of Stichting Mooi organisation which helps people with financial and administrative problems helped Femia’s get her finances back on track.

Getting out of Poverty - Temel - Belgium

Temel, 46 years old, was unemployed for more than 10 years. Having to pay alimony to his ex-wife and taking care of the 2 children from his current marriage, he ran up serious debts. In Belgium, the “at risk of poverty threshold” is 899 Euros with 15% of the population at risk of poverty and social exclusion. Today, thanks to the OCMW, the public organisation for social welfare, which helps him to manage his income, Temel’s situation has improved a lot. But still, every euro counts. That’s why Temel welcomes the social grocery-initiative, where people supported by the OCMW, can buy basic products at a significant discount.

Serbian born Marijan leads a difficult life, but for the first time he is going to KinderUni. Each year, the University of Vienna organises two weeks of workshops, lectures and courses for children aged 7 to 12, free of charge. Austria, with 12 % of its population below the ‘at risk of poverty threshold’ income of EUR 951 per month, has taken specific measures to fight poverty and social exclusion, especially for children. Thanks to the help of local organisations and European funds, KinderUni offers the possibility for boys like Marijan to find his way in life.

Disability is no handicap to work

A former shipyard worker, Andrzej Lubowiecki took a course funded by the European Social Fund to help partially disabled people apply for work and got a job the next day. Through the European Social Fund, the EU works in partnership with Poland to improve people's job opportunities and raise living standards.
