The European Commission has proposed to provide Poland with €115,205 from the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund (EGF) to help 50 former workers of Zakłady Chemiczne Zachem and two of its suppliers and downstream producers to find new jobs.

The proposal now goes to the European Parliament and the EU's Council of Ministers for approval. The redundancies took place in the region Kujawsko-Pomorskie.

Poland applied for support from the EGF following the dismissal of 615 workers in Zakłady Chemiczne Zachem and two of its suppliers and downstream producers Zachem Ucr Sp. z.o.o and Metalko Sp z.o.o.

These job losses were the result of major structural changes in world trade patterns due to globalisation, in particular the EU's declining market share in the chemical industry, losing its top position in the world for sales of chemicals.

The affected workers will primarily receive ESF and national supporting measures combined.

The EGF support is sought to top-up this support with two additional measures:

• hiring incentives and
• jobs in a secured working environment.

Both measures are aimed at the 50 workers facing the greatest difficulties in finding new jobs.

The total estimated cost of these additional two measures is €230,410, of which the EGF would provide half.
