Social dialogue in this sector covers activities defined by NACE (Rev.2) codes 41, 42 and 43:

  • construction of buildings
  • civil engineering
  • specialised construction activities.

With over 14m workers (Eurostat, 2014 Labour Force Survey data) in over 3m firms (Eurostat, 2013 Business Statistics), the construction sector is the EU's biggest industrial employer. The challenges it faces include:

  • the fact that firms andtheir workers have to move to the location where the product is built
  • seasonal and variable demand
  • demographic change
  • technological change
  • the greening of the economy.

The sectoral social dialogue committee is currently focusing on:

  • demographic change and how to take into account an ageing workforce
  • initiatives for youth employment
  • youth and vocational training
  • fostering a culture of health and safety
  • improving the functioning of the labour market
  • mobility within the single market.
