One of the most important developments in apprenticeships and VET over the past 20 years has been the opening of VET to tertiary education, including higher apprenticeships. Despite that, the level of higher apprenticeships in Europe varies between countries. Still, the participant numbers are steadily growing, thanks to higher education institutions and governments promoting higher apprenticeships as an attractive option.

The May webinar had 104 registrants from 23 countries. It began with an introduction from Tim Schreiber, Policy Officer at the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Employment, Social Affairs and Inclusion, who gave an overview of higher VET and presented the current challenges and trends in the field.

This was followed by a presentation by Jörg Markowitsch, Senior Partner at 3s Research & Consulting, Austria, who presented the characteristics of higher VET across Europe, its benefits, as well as a good practice example from Germany.

Finally, Stéphanie Devèze, Deputy Head of the Department of Training and Employment at the French Ministry of Higher Education, Research and Innovation, presented the French apprenticeship model, how higher apprenticeships were developed in France, as well as the current challenges and trends.
