Last weekend the first ever European Pillar of Social Rights Award went to the short documentary "Traslasierra", which shows how anybody – including those with hearing impairments – can enjoy beautiful music.

The prize, sponsored by the European Commission, was awarded at the International Social Film Festival of Castilla-La Mancha in Toledo (Spain) on Sunday 17 October. 

According to the jury, the documentary deserved the prize as an excellent illustration of the inclusion of people with disabilities, as well as of principle 17 of the European Pillar of Social Rights.

Traslasierra tells the story of her director, Raquel Kurpershoek, fascinated by Flamenco’s music and sign language and how she tries to bring together these two passions in a project that will change people’s lives.

Overcoming barriers, building bridges between people and countries, beyond disabilities: this is the challenge that “Traslasierra” tell us.

The European Pillar of Social Rights Award, created this year under the cooperation of the European Commission and the International Social Film Festival of Castilla-La Mancha, aims to reward short films (fiction or documentary) which best illustrate one of the 20 principles of the European Pillar, such as the inclusion of people with disabilities.
