The Social Situation Monitor (SSM) team welcomes your abstract for an oral presentation at a SSM seminar that will take place in Brussels, on 12, 14 or 15 November 2019, subject to speakers’ availability.

Focus of the seminar: Changing value chains and their impact on employment

Digital technologies and transition to carbon-neutral society are expected to have a profound impact on value chains, including on employment, working conditions and the size/width of these value chains. However, there is still little research on the significance of this phenomenon.

The aim of our next seminar will be to present the latest research on these trends, and discuss their implications for the EU. More specifically, we are looking for three types of presentations:

  • Presentations describing and quantifying changes in value chains and their main drivers including, but not limited to the resort to digitalisation, 3D printing, automation, circular economy, decarbonisation and transport costs and the way in which they affect employment;
  • Presentations estimating the expected or actual effects of these changes on European labour markets, including employment, working conditions and representation.
  • Presentations identifying/evaluating policies that support resilience of the European labour markets in the midst of such changes.

We welcome presentations based on EU/OECD data, or based on methodologies that could be scaled up at EU/OECD level. The methods and data used should be shortly presented in the abstracts.

How to submit an abstract

Please submit your abstract (2000 characters maximum) and biography (1200 characters maximum) electronically by 8 October 2019.

Abstracts will be reviewed by the SSM team, which includes representatives from the European Commission, LSE Enterprise and ICF Consulting. Abstracts will be assessed based on their quality and relevance to the work of the SSM team.

Invited speakers will be given 20 minutes to present and 20 minutes to respond to questions from the audience. Travel and accommodation costs will be covered for one presenter per paper (in case of co-authored papers).

Submit your abstract here.
