Treatment, coverage & costs
Doctors
- To obtain treatment using your European Health Insurance Card, you should consult a doctor who is contracted to the Health Service Executive's primary care scheme (public health system).
- Treatment is provided free of charge by these doctors.
- You can get details of these doctors from the local Health Service Executive office.
- If you are not sure that the doctor treating you is contracted to the Primary Care Reimbursement Service (PCRS), make clear you want to be treated under the public health system.
Prescriptions
- Medicines prescribed by a doctor, contracted to the HSE are supplied subject to a nominal prescription charge.
Dentists
- Necessary dental treatment, including denture repair, is available from dentists contracted to the HSE.
- Contact your local Health Service Executive office or dental clinic prior to treatment.
Hospital treatment
- In an emergency, go directly to the accident and emergency department of any public hospital.
- There is no charge for any necessary care provided to European Health Insurance Card holders.
Ambulance
