Waste water treatment scheme for Litorale Domitio coastline in Campania, Italy

  • 09 January 2020

A project on the coastline of Campania, Italy is expanding the sewage and waste water treatment network by 75 km. The work includes renovation of existing parts of the network, including a revamp of 11 waste water treatment plants. Water quality monitoring stations are being installed as part of the scheme. This is phase two of a larger initiative to upgrade sewage and waste water treatment systems in the area.

Seven municipalities in the province of Caserta are covered by the scheme – Carinola, Cellole, Castel Volturno, Francolise, Mondragone, Sessa Aurunca and Villa Literno. The project covers 18 % of the provincial territory and 100 % of the coastline – that is equivalent to 45 km of coast on the Tyrrhenian Sea, from Lake Patria to the river Garigliano.

Boosting tourism

The new facilities help restore the attractiveness of the Domium coastline to the tourism industry by eliminating the release of waste water into channels and ditches that flow directly to the sea.

Between 2014 and 2020, EU funding is helping the Campania region upgrade its sewage and water networks. Work will see more than 3 000 000 residents benefit from improved waste water treatment infrastructure, while ensuring that 100 % of the urban population has access to clean drinking water.

The Campania region in southern Italy is home to around 5 800 000 people. Both its inland areas and coastline are popular destinations with tourists, who are attracted by sites of outstanding beauty such as the Amalfi Coast and the Island of Capri. The regional capital of Naples is Italy’s third largest city after Rome and Milan. Campania is also the most densely populated region in the country.

Total investment and EU funding

Total investment for the project “The Blue flag of the Litorale Domitio, II. phase” is EUR 80 000 000, with the EU’s European Regional Development Fund contributing EUR 53 375 347 through the “Campania” Operational Programme for the 2014-2020 programming period. The investment falls under the priority “Environment and Resource Efficiency”.
