The new sports hall in Slomniki is the first passive public building in Poland and has been providing an excellent opportunity for social inclusion through sport and physical activities.

Słomniki is a town in Małopolska, Poland, with around 4 500 inhabitants. The aim of the project was to create a multi-functional hall for sports and entertainment that was integrated with a nearby school while also being easily accessible to the general public.
The sports hall is the first passive public building in Poland and was awarded a quality certificate from by the Passive house Institute in Darmstadt. The Passive House concept achieves the highest thermal comfort conditions and refers to a rigorous, voluntary standard for energy efficiency. These buildings require a significant amount less energy for heating and cooling.
Functional excellence
The building’s location was chosen because of the direct proximity to sources of heat (natural gas, condensing gas boilers location), which is located nearby the secondary school. The hall is currently connected to a gas grid, power supply, water supply, and sewage system.
The building was made in accordance with the standards for passive construction. A lot of wood-derived materials have been used while the hall uses a mechanical ventilation system with heat recovery which provides a constant level of heat and clean air. Excessive warming is prevented by the roller shutter system while the location of the windows minimizes sunlight in summer.
As a result of the project, six new jobs have been created. The sports hall also went on to receive the 11th edition prize in the competition for the "Best of the Year 2010 projects in Lesser Poland - Malopolska Leader" and was showcased in the campaign "Innovative Poland from 2010 to 2020. Highly energy saving passive buildings in each Polish municipality and city."
Total investment and EU funding
Total investment for the project “Construction of the sports hall in Słomniki” is EUR 1 539 163, of which the EU’s European Regional Development Fund is contributing EUR 366 545 from the Operational Programme “Lesser Poland” for the 2007 to 2013 programming period.
