RIO - Regional Innovation System

The programme "Regional Innovation System Upper Austria" (RIO) aimed to strengthen the regional innovation system of Oberösterreich (Upper Austria) and the innovation performance of the regional sectoral clusters, in particular by interconnecting the clusters through cross-sectoral networks with horizontal competence.

OMNIPACK Cluster Establishment and Development

The OMNIPACK cluster project aims at establishing the regions of Královehradecký, Pardubický and Vysočina as a first-rate centre for the development of the packaging industry in the Czech Republic. The cluster management fosters cooperation and acts as a coordination mechanism for its members with a view to increase their competitiveness and innovativeness, and to enable them to enter new markets, create new job opportunities and new companies. The project was launched on 1 March 2006 and will finish on 30 June 2008. The OMNIPACK cluster is one of the first cluster projects in the Czech Republic.

Medicon Valley

Since 1997, co-operation in the field of life-sciences in the cross-border Öresund region has been structured under the brand name 'Medicon Valley'. The primary initiators behind the cluster organisation Medicon Valley Academy were the universities in Lund and Copenhagen, strongly supported by the major pharmaceutical companies in the region, e.g. Novo Nordisk, Lundbeck and Astra-Zeneca. Copenhagen Capacity and Region Skåne, the public organisations promoting the region on respectively the Danish and Swedish sides of the straits have also been key players. Medicon Valley was initially co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the INTERREG programme. The development of business and research co-operation in life sciences was given a major boost in 2000 as a result of the opening of the Öresund Bridge (which was also ERDF cofinanced in a separate project).

Andalusian Stone Technology Centre (CTAP)

Macael marble has been hewn from the Sierra de los Filabres Mountains in Almeria in southern Spain since Phoenician times. It was used in the Roman Theatre in Mérida, the Great Mosque in Cordoba, the Alhambra in Granada, as well as countless monasteries, cathedrals, palaces and sculptures. Today, the stone sector of Andalusia remains concentrated in the area of Macael in the north of the province of Almería, where there are some 400 companies and a direct workforce of some 9,000 people. The region of Macael draws together the largest number of mining workings, production and workforce in the sector of extraction and transformation of natural stone in Andalusia.

Snowpolis

Snowpolis Technology Park is an European Regional Development Fund co-financed project located in the town of Sotkamo in the Kainuu region of eastern Finland. The overall objective of the Snowpolis project was to establish the basic infrastructure and operations for an international technology park specialised in three areas: wellness and sports technology, nutrition technology and technologies related to snow and winter conditions. At the end of 2006 there were a total of 19 companies located in Snowpolis ranging from sports technology, nutrition technology, to winter technologies and various other fields. It is estimated that about 60 jobs have been created as a result of the project.

Mobient - Mobile Content Development and Marketing

The objective of Mobient - a mobile business development project - was to support R&D and commercialisation of mobile contents as well as the development of content and media SMEs in the Oulu region. In the project, it was mainly digital content, services and technological applications for mobile user terminals that were created.

The method used by this "economic literacy" campaign makes it truly original: an interactive game adapted to individual needs.

The development and promotion of an industrial cluster of the Podkarpackie voivodship

The Aviation Valley Association was created in 2003 by a group of local entrepreneurs with the aim of making Podkarpackie, Poland, one of the leading aviation regions in Europe, along with already existing aviation clusters such as those in Toulouse and Bordeaux in France. The principle tool for reaching this vision was to build a strong regional cluster allowing for better exploitation of regional potential. In this context, the Aviation Valley project activities were aimed at supporting an initial phase of cluster development with the focus on enhanced communication mechanisms within the cluster as well as improved presentation to the outside world, most notably to potential investors.
