The National Food Chain Safety Office’s (Nébih) Project Wasteless has been awarded 1st place in Hungary’s 2024 European Week for Waste Reduction (EWWR) awards in the “Public Administration and Authority” category. The program, dedicated to fighting food waste for nearly a decade, has also been nominated by the Ministry of Energy for the international EWWR competition, where it will represent Hungary in the public administration category.

During the European Week for Waste Reduction, Project Wasteless reached 19,400 people online and engaged 368 children in person through a diverse range of activities. The campaign focused on bringing the issue of food waste to various age groups and communities using multiple communication channels. Key activities included:

  • Interactive workshops for children
  • An intensive online campaign, complemented by a giveaway
  • “Cook wasteless!” webinar
  • Encouraging households to participate in the hungarian household food waste survey
  • Collaboration with MiReHu Nonprofit Ltd. to expand outreach
At the core of the initiative was the waste hierarchy model, adapted specifically for food waste prevention. This framework effectively demonstrated the most impactful ways to reduce and manage food waste, ensuring a clear and practical message on sustainability.

Project Wasteless remains committed to spreading the message that food is valuable, and preventing waste is a shared responsibility. The Hungarian award is a great recognition of the initiative’s efforts, and the program is now honored to compete at the European level.
