A voluntary agreement, Ireland's Food Waste Charter is a public commitment by companies and organisations to measure and report on target-based actions to reduce food waste.
Ireland has committed to halving food waste by 2030 under UN Sustainable Development Goal 12.3. This is a significant challenge as approximately 750,000 tonnes of food waste are generated in Ireland annually. By preventing waste, using resources efficiently and rescuing surplus food, Ireland can meet national goals and lessen the environmental impact of food waste. Efforts to reduce food waste require a collective response from government, public bodies, food supply chain businesses and households. In response to this challenge, Ireland established the Food Waste Charter, a voluntary agreement where businesses can pledge to measure, reduce and report on food waste.
