On 8 October, CEMAS (World Sustainable Urban Food Center of València) and EUFIC (European Food Information Council) organised an international event in the city of Valencia to address capacity building for food loss and waste prevention and reduction in cities.
The event featured:
- EU targets, legislation, funding, and FLW tools – e.g. food waste prevention calculator and an app for surplus food recovery and redistribution - NET (NaturEaTown).
Initiatives from Cagliari, Warsaw, Milan, Courbevoie and Gothenburg
- Workshops on reducing consumer food waste, multi-stakeholder collaboration, measurement and reuse of FLW. Several European cities participated in the workshops: Bergamo, Venice, Dublin, Oslo, Halandri, Barcelona, Valencia, Cagliari, Warsaw, Milan, Courbevoie and Gothenburg.
- The event recording can be found here.
The event proved to be an ideal space to raise awareness of the current situation in the European Union, the objectives set, the legislation in force, the funding programmes and the tools available. It also served to promote the exchange of experiences and knowledge between European cities on public policies and initiatives to reduce food loss and waste, and created a space for dialogue between cities to discuss capacity building, challenges and difficulties, but also possible keys to success.
