Funding opportunities to build a European justice area and uphold fundamental rights

This month, DG Justice and Consumers launches new calls for proposals covering a wide range of policies, from racism, xenophobia, and rights of the child to judicial training and victims' rights.The actions selected will be financed through two programmes that support the development of a justice area in the European Union: the Justice Programme, and the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme.The Commission shall ensure that the actions selected – whether small-scale or national – will contribute to consistent and coherent implementation of Union law, and to wide public awareness about the rights deriving from it.

The projects will be assessed on:

  • their potential to develop mutual trust among Member States and improve cross-border cooperation;
  • their transnational impact;
  • their contribution to the elaboration and dissemination of best practices;
  • their potential to contribute to creation of minimum standards, practical tools and solutions that address cross-border or Union-wide challenges.

The Justice Programme objective is to contribute to further develop a European area of justice based on mutual recognition and mutual trust, in particular by promoting judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters.With a budget of EUR 378 million over the period 2014-2020, the Justice Programme offers concrete financial support to organisations focusing on judicial cooperation in civil and criminal matters, judicial training, effective access to justice in Europe and inititiave in the field of drugs policy.

The Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme 2014-2020 objective is to contribute to the further develop an area where equality and the rights of persons are promoted, protected and effectively implemented.With a budget of EUR 439.5 million over the period 2014-2020, the Rights, Equality and Citizenship Programme defends the rights and freedoms that people are entitled to under EU law. It promotes non-discrimination, gender equality, rights of the child, and EU citizenship rights. It fights against any form of intolerance, violence, and ensures consumer rights and protection of personal data.
