Building upon the results and achievements of the SWITCH-Asia Zero Carbon Resorts 1 project (2009-2014) in the Philippines, the Zero Carbon Resorts 2 project replicated the strategies in further regions in the Philippines and also expanded and adapted the method in Thailand. The project, which ended in 2018, contributed to the sustainable development of the tourism sector and value chain in both countries, with a particular focus on the reduction of resource consumption and CO2 emissions.

Additionally, project activities addressed access to finance, Green Hotel certification, (cross-country) exchange of best practices, and policy dialogue. A capacity-building programme promoted sustainable consumption and production practices among tourism SMEs, and the attractive economic returns due to savings achieved led to a high rate of replication.

A critical mass of SMEs demonstrated the value of green tourism by increasing resource efficiency and using renewable resources.
