2018 will see increased global attention to sustainable consumption and production (SCP) with, among others, a specific focus on SDG 12 (Ensure Sustainable Consumption and Production patterns) during the next high-level political forum on sustainable development in July. On this occasion, we have decided to zoom in on the green economy, with several articles presenting our approach to promote inclusive green economies in our partner countries.

The new European Consensus on Development provides an updated framework for our cooperation on the green economy, with a commitment to scaling-up investments in the "low-emission, climate-resilient green economy". It emphasises SCP, with a view to decoupling economic growth from environmental degradation, and the transition to a circular economy, which the EU promotes actively in Europe and, increasingly, at global level.

We already support significant initiatives on green economy, notably the SWITCH to Green flagship and its regional programmes through which we have committed EUR 250 million. The recent strategic evaluation of EU cooperation on the Green Economy shows encouraging results. In particular, SWITCH to Green has had a high impact in terms of improved business practices and job creation.

This is very important. It demonstrates that cooperation on green economy is not only important for the environment, but also an effective way to deliver inclusive and sustainable growth. This is the vision of the new European Consensus, which highlights the contribution of the Green Economy to both Planet and Prosperity priorities.We should therefore not see the Green Economy as a stand-alone sector of cooperation, but as a pathway to achieving the SDGs by reconciling economic, social and environment objectives. This must guide our action across areas such as environment, private sector development, employment, sustainable cities and others. I hope this newsletter will give you plenty of inspiration!
