Greening EU energy cooperation and development

The European Commission's Directorate-General for International Cooperation and Development (DG DEVCO) has developed a practical guidance document to strengthen the integration of environment and climate change in energy projects and budget support operations.

date:  21/03/2018

The ‘Sector note: Energy’ highlights opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, reduce environmental degradation, build resilience and improve climate change adaptation. It provides concrete examples of measures and indicators to address environment and climate change concerns in the sector.

Not only is renewable energy production crucial to the development of the energy sector; so are energy efficiency, hybridising energy sources and increasing power storage.

Integrating environment and climate change in the energy sector helps to anticipate adverse impacts in energy generation related to environmental degradation and climate change, and ensures that infrastructure investments are resilient to these effects. It also helps to better assess and manage the inter-relation between water, energy and food security.

Integrating the management of the energy sector enhances the environment and thus public health and biodiversity, and increases productivity and green economy opportunities (e.g. deployment and maintenance of renewable energy infrastructure).
