The adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) in 2022 significantly raised the ambition of the international community to protect biodiversity and called on companies around the world to take urgent action. One year after Montreal, the European Business and Nature Summit (EBNS) convened leading business and finance organisations across Europe to discuss actions to implement the GBF and facilitate the shift to a nature-positive businesses, economies, and societies. While the recognition of the importance of biodiversity was palatable within the business community, the actions implementing the GBF Goals and Targets on the ground need to accelerate and scale up.

2024 will be a critical year for biodiversity. Two years after the adoption of the GBF, the sixteenth session of the Conference of the Parties will be an opportunity for public and private actors worldwide to review the state of implementation of their commitments. With its official slogan “Peace with Nature”, COP16 will place particular emphasis on the role of local communities as custodians of biodiversity, and their relationship with the private sector, civil society, and national government entities. The interlinkages between climate change and the biodiversity crisis, already emphasised at COP28 of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change will also represent a strong focus of COP16.
