EU Summits environmental highlights

EU-US summit - 15 Jun 2021

The Summit showed a clear shift in the US relations with the EU and in the US approach to green agenda. The leaders agreed to build collaboration in efforts to "protect our planet and foster green growth”. The highlights include:

  • Halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030 and take urgent action to address its drivers, by implementing the global 30x30 conservation objective in 2030.
  • Work together on ocean protection, including by fighting marine litter.
  • Cooperate towards sustainable blue economy, sustainable fisheries and prevention of illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

EU-Canada Summit - 14 Jun 2021

The leaders decided to enhance their green collaboration with the following highlights:

  • Pursue the adoption of an ambitious global framework to conserve, protect and restore biodiversity at the next CBD Cop15.
  • Put a special emphasis on the issue of deforestation and land degradation.
  • Promote the restoration of oceans and seas as well as their sustainability through joint initiatives, including through the launch of the Ocean Partnership Forum.

EU-Japan – 31 May 2021:

The key deliverable of the EU-Japan Summit was the Green Alliance – the first of its kind. The Alliance has a very strong environmental dimension reflecting the overall spirit of the European Green Deal and DG ENV top priorities. The intention is to deepen green cooperation with Japan, to make it more visible and promote the green agenda together at a global level

The Green Alliance with Japan includes the following environmental aspects:

  • A joint commitment to green transition and to climate neutral, biodiversity-friendly, circular and resource-efficient economies.
  • Enhanced cooperation on supply chains sustainability, circular economy, resource efficiency, sustainable product policy with the focus on the entire life-cycle of products.
  • Enhanced policy dialogue on green finance, battery ecosystem, alternatives to the use of micro-plastics.

On Research and Development collaboration, there is a special focus on bioeconomy

EU-India Summit - 8 May 2021:

The Joint Statement highlighted the interdependence between climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution and the need to address these issues holistically. More specifically:

  • The leaders relaunched the EU-India “climate dialogue”.
  • The leaders agreed to boost cooperation in the areas of air pollution in water management.
