The Initiative for coal regions in transition in the Western Balkans and Ukraine has come to an end. In this concluding newsletter, we would like to highlight some of its final products and share details on the next steps.

The European Commission, Directorate-General for European Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations (DG NEAR), is planning a just transition initiative for the Western Balkans under IPA 2024. This new initiative will start in 2024 and build on and expand the current initiative. Particularly, it will enhance engagement with the private sector and international financial institutions, as well as municipalities. It will also support the implementation of pilot projects aimed to phase out coal and decarbonise carbon-heavy industries.
