60th Anniversary of the Rome Treaties: The Berlin Representation finds 60 good reasons in favour of the European Union

Launching its recent information campaign, organised jointly by the European Parliament Information Office and the German Federalist movement, Reinhard Hönighaus, spokesperson at the Commission Representation in Berlin, presented a new brochure entitled "60 reasons for the EU – Why we still need the European Union". The brochure is part of a communication toolbox which includes a logo, a slogan, posters, postcards and visuals for use on social media. "We want to inform citizens that this day, 25 March, marks the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaties of Rome and to remind them of the many good reasons why membership of the European Union benefits all of us, not just today but beyond", declared Mr Hönighaus.

In 12 chapters, the 64-page brochure "gives concrete examples of what the EU has achieved and why it is still relevant and important for the future", explains Nadine Böttcher from the Representation's Communication Unit. As well as highlighting the fact that the EU has helped to maintain peace in Europe for 70 years, it also outlines some of the many actions and programmes that have been put in place over the last 60 years. These include actions to strengthen the economy; to protect consumers; to reduce mobile phone charges and the cost of airline tickets; to promote clean air and water; to enable free movement for EU citizens and to assist in the fight against terrorism and organised crime. It also refers to the recent creation of the European Solidarity Corps, the EU's involvement in dealing with the refugee crisis and its role as the world's largest donor of humanitarian aid.
