In addition to the ‘institutional open days', this year the European Union is launching a major Conference on the Future of Europe, inviting everyone to have a say on the EU we want to live in tomorrow.
Europe Day celebrates peace and unity in Europe. The date marks the anniversary of the «Schuman declaration». On that day in 1950, Robert Schuman, the then French Minister for Foreign Affairs, proposed a new form of political cooperation for Europe which would make any war between the continent's nations unthinkable. His vision was to create a European institution that would pool and manage coal and steel production. A treaty creating such a body was signed just under a year later. Schuman's proposal is considered to be the beginning of what is now the European Union.
