A Czech Pact for Rural Development

The Ministry of Regional Development launched the "national" Rural Pact for Czechia during the "Joint Seminar on Community-led Local Development and Smart Villages" in Lednice on 28 October. We hope this first national rural pact will lead the way to many more rural cross-policy initiatives at national level.

EU CAP network and Rural proofing

In the Long-term vision for rural areas and as part of the Better Regulation Agenda, the European commission has committed to setup a rural proofing mechanism to help ensure that major EU legislative initiatives  are developed through a “rural lens” and aligned with rural needs and realities.

Building Sustainable, Resilient and Thriving Rural Places - The 13th OECD Rural Development Conference

“The 13th OECD Rural Development Conference hosted by the Government of Ireland, emphasised the critical role of rural places in driving sustainable and inclusive growth and reinforced the need to strengthen place-based and place-led opportunities and resilience against global shocks.” These are the introductory words of the Cavan-OECD Roadmap on Strengthening Rural Resilience for Global Challenges, which lists six cross-cutting actions that the OECD intends to take, including developing a definition of functional rural areas, improving data, advancing the implementation of OECD principles on rural policy, facilitating dialogue with rural communities and deepening international collaboration. You can read the full document here.

Rural Geographies in Transition – Call for proposals

The 3rd Rural Geographies Conference will take place in Groningen, in the Netherlands, from 26-29 June 2023. The theme is “Rural Geographies in Transition”. This event is by the way one of the commitments that was made during the Rural Pact Conference and that is now materialising!

The Future is Youth – Rural Inspirational Awards

Congratulations to the five winners who were announced at the Award Ceremony that took place on the 6th of October during the EU CAP Network Launch Event. Successful stories can inspire people to replicate similar initiatives elsewhere, to help rural areas address the challenges they face.

Woola – Upcycling waste wool to replace plastic

Our first trip takes us to Estonia and to “Woola”, winner of the “Green Futures” category, where owners of an e-commerce business were lacking sustainable alternatives to the use of plastic bubble wrap used for packing material. Acknowledging at the same time the wasting of 90% of the wool produced in the country, Woola was born!

Creating opportunities for rural youth

The second award takes us to Gilău, in Romania, for the Socially Inclusive & Innovative Futures category. The LAG Napoca Porolissum set up a social inclusion centre in the village of Gilău to offer young people a space to interact and participate in various activities and events.

Raise your voice!

As you know, one of the objectives of the Rural Pact is to amplify rural voices to put them higher on the policy agenda. We would like to translate this at the level of this newsletter too. So here’s a section dedicated to “Rural Voices”! Feel free to share your ideas or projects by sending us an email entitled “Rural voices” and we’ll try to feature as many as possible.
